What is a childhood brain tumor?
Whatever stage you're at, DLF is here to support your whole family.
What it is
A brain tumour is a growth of abnormal cells in or around the brain. In children, they are the most common solid tumour. Because the brain controls so much β movement, balance, vision, speech β symptoms depend a great deal on where the tumour is.
Low-grade vs high-grade
Tumours are often described by how quickly they grow. Low-grade tumours grow slowly; high-grade tumours grow more quickly. The grade, type and location all help doctors plan the right care for your child.
Where they occur
- The cerebellum and brain stem (affecting balance and coordination)
- The cerebrum (affecting movement, senses and thinking)
- Near the pituitary gland or optic pathways (affecting hormones or vision)
